The iconic Flying Saucer marked the entrance to the old Hyattsville Library for decades and it was critical to preserve it during the demolition of the building. The Flying Saucer was safely relocated to the new library’s garden and outdoor gathering area.
The striking architectural forms, punctuated by glass, showcase the new and improved services the library offers. Underground parking maximizes green space and eliminates parking structures that would have blocked views of the new community feature. Study spaces were added, the children's area expanded, and more space devoted to digital media all meet the needs of the Hyattsville community.
Sustainability
State-of-the-art technology and sustainable design elements highlight the library’s commitment to the future. The reading plaza and garden provide outdoor learning spaces and a quiet place to enjoy a good book.
The building’s exterior is constructed using locally sourced brick and durable terracotta panels, as well as recycled components, and includes sustainable features such as vegetative roofs and photovoltaic (PV) arrays.
The children’s area is imagined as a Discovery Village in the heart of the library. Complete with a drawbridge, moat, and castle walls, this children’s area brings warmth and excitement to the library stacks. Recognizing the changing role of public libraries, the design’s additional features include a café, community meeting rooms, technology labs, and study rooms.
Closing Thoughts
A soaring lobby space and central spine connect public areas, private reading, and Discovery Village, and open up to a refreshing public plaza overlooking the refurbished Flying Saucer.
